A social relationship is normally seen as a connection between two individuals, as a romantic or intimate relationship or a parent-child relationship. Individuals may also have relationships with groups of people, such as the relationship between a priest and his congregation, an uncle and a family, or a mayor and a city. Finally, also groups and even countries have relationships with each other, but it is a much broader field than what is covered by social relationship. Most scholarly work on relationships focuses on romantic relationships in couples. These intimate relationships is just a small part of all social relations.
All relationships include some level of independence. People in a relationship tend to influence each other, share their thoughts and feelings, as well as participate in activities together. Because of this interdependence is something that alters or affects one member of the relationship to some extent also affect the other member. The study of social relationships is part of several scientific disciplines in the social sciences, including sociology, psychology, anthropology and social work.
